In Almaty at leisure
There are many excellent places in Almaty which you can visit at leisure. Such as: museums, the huge republic square, the Holy Ascension Church, Central State Museum, beautiful theatres, trip up the nearby mountains to Chymbolak, Medeo and etc.
For Kazakh food, song, and dance all in one, this restaurant is the place to go. They have menus in English and have a wide assortment of dishes to choose from, both Kazakh and international cuisine. In some of them you can listen Kazakh songs played with traditional instruments.
Nightlife of Almaty is very efficient. There are pubs, bars, and night clubs. Choose wherever you want to go. The architecture of night Almaty is amazing. Each building is lighten beautifully.
You can visit numerous theatres of different genres, such as: drama, opera, ballet, modern & etc. For example, Abay State Opera and Ballet Theater has just been redesigned and looks quite beautiful. The ballet cast a spell on the public and the orchestra is just fabulous.
The State Museum of Arts named after a prominent Kazakh artist Abylkhan Kasteev was opened in 1976. Most of its reserves were formed in the 1930's through donations of exhibits from the Hermitage (St. Petersburg) and Tretiakov Gallery (Moscow) to the then Shevchenko's Gallery in Alma-Ata. The Museum features the traditional, modern and contemporary art of Kazakhstan, other Central Asian and CIS countries, and has exhibits of 19th and 20th century French and Italian art. The museum has a souvenir shop which has Kazakh and Russian art products (jewelry, paintings, etc.) for sale and a batik shop. There is also an arts school for children at the museum, entered from the foyer.
